A very fun North American bean family member that is unjustly rare in northeastern US gardens. The sizable ovate crowned plants offer irregular, almost spooky structure in youth, becoming more refined with age. Stout twigs are adorned with massive bipinnately compound leaves that can reach as much as 3' in length. Leaves are deep green through the season adding a comforting backdrop to spring's pyramidal flower panicles comprised of heavily perfumed white blossoms. 7" heavy textured pods, produced in autumn, house large seeds that were used by early settlers as a coffee substitute. Plants are well suited for large properties in rich, evenly moist scenarios.
