A diverse group of plants with species native from the Great Plains to the open woods of Maine. Baptisia was once used as a dye substitute for true indigo, Indigofera sp. The 2-5' tall clump-forming plants produce racemes of pea-like flowers that typically rise above the blue-green foliage. These trouble-free plants grow best in full sun and are tolerant of many soil types.
