Sustainable Residential Landscaping - Planting for your Home's Own Microclimates
and the Greater Environmental Context – Sunday, August 22nd
Time: 4-6 PM Cost: $15.00 Pre-registration Required
What are sustainable landscape goals and why should a home owner concern themselves? Besides altruism and the obvious future of our planet, as it turns out, natural designs save time, energy and money and can result in reduced heating, cooling and maintenance costs. Indigenous and sustainable plant materials also better fit the environmental context. Through this talk, Landscape Designer Amy Sampson will describe how to evaluate microclimates and coordinate landscape choices with natural events and cycles. Examples of sustainable plants appropriate for different sun and wind exposures will be provided. Additional sustainable landscape goals will be discussed including ways in which to minimize site impact, restore damaged sites, reuse and recycle and create a healthy environment.

Luscious Landscaping with Fruiting Trees, Shrubs and Vines -
Saturday, October 2nd
Time: TBA Cost: $25.00 Pre-registration Required
What could be more pleasant than picking luscious fruits from a plant that you also admire for its beauty? Author and landscape consultant Lee Reich will discuss some of the best trees, shrubs, and vines for this purpose, plants that require little maintenance yet provide stunning flowers in spring, color in autumn and neat form in winter. For landscaping, the ideal is a plant that also is low maintenance, being pest-resistant and requiring little or no pruning. Learn how to grow shadbush, gumi, actinidia, medlar, and other ornamental, fruiting plants, and how to use them to beautify your yard. Lee plans to bring samples of different fruits for tasting.
